Lady Gaga
and bisexuality

Lady Gaga holding a pride flag up to her face and looking cute. Her face is surrounded by digital bi inspired stickers.

Lady Gaga is a woman whose bisexuality is often erased, both in the media and by everyday people. While her sexuality does not define her as a person, her experiences and struggles of growing up queer in a heteronormative world do shape her and the art she shares with us.This carrd was created with bi+ and sapphic people (who feel seen by her) in mind and serves as a resource on the topic of bisexuality in general, misconceptions surrounding Gaga and how she herself has expressed and spoken about it through the years.

What is bisexuality?

Bisexuality is a sexual orientation most commonly defined as attraction to more than one gender.

Since bisexuality is a very fluid orientation, its definition can vary from person to person. Other common definitions include:
attraction to multiple genders
attraction to the same gender and other genders
attraction to all genders
• ...

An important thing to note is that bisexuality is not binary but inclusive of all genders. Many bisexuals identify with Robyn Ochs (bisexual activist)'s popular definition, which goes as follows:"I call myself bisexual because I acknowledge that I have in myself the potential to be attracted – romantically and/or sexually – to people of more than one gender, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree."

The bisexual+ (or bi+) umbrella also includes other identities who are attracted to more than one gender, such as pansexual, queer, people who prefer to use no label at all, and so on.

You can find more information on the meaning of bisexuality at the Bisexual Resource Center.

What is biphobia?

Biphobia is prejudice, fear or hatred directed at people who experience attraction to people of more than one gender (including anyone under the bi+ umbrella). Biphobia can compromise the mental health and safety of bisexual+ people. It can take many forms, including:
• negative reactions to people coming out as bi
• gatekeeping who is “really” bi based on a person's relationship history
• assuming that bi people are inherently hypersexual, untrustworthy, or more likely to cheat
• physical or sexual violence against bi people on the basis of their identity
• structural biases, like being dismissed by doctors, not being hired for jobs, or being denied housing due to one’s identity

What is bi erasure?

One common form of biphobia is bi erasure.
Bisexual erasure is the tendency to ignore, remove, falsify, or reexplain evidence of bisexuality in history, academia, the news media, and other primary sources and leads to bisexual invisibility. In its most extreme form, bisexual erasure can include the belief that bisexuality itself does not exist.
Bi erasure leads to bisexuals being denied access to resources, shelter and also representation.Source: Wikipedia

Why is Gaga questioned?

Given the many times Gaga has been open about being bi, one might wonder why her identity would ever be up for discussion.
Unfortunately, there are a few reasons why people have doubted the legitimacy and validity of Gaga's bisexuality (unsurprisingly all rooted in biphobia and bi erasure).

So let's take a look and unpack:

1. She has only dated men in the public eye

Since Gaga became famous in 2008, she has not been seen dating a woman, causing many people to doubt her attraction to them. However, contrary to popular belief, her dating history is irrelevant to whether or not she is bisexual. As most people know, one does not need to date a person in order to feel attracted to them. The only person who knows who Gaga is attracted to, is she herself and she has been pretty open and obvious about it. So when she tells us that she likes women, the only respectful thing to do is believe her and respect how she identifies. As she has mentioned before, she has nothing to prove. She is always valid.

I am bisexual, I've said it before, I'll say it again. I don't need to eat pussy in front of the world to be taken seriously

Attitude Magazine, December 2013

2. She said she is "not a gay woman"

In 2017, Gaga appeared on the 9th season premiere of RuPaul's Drag Race. In the Untucked episode she talks to the drag queens, who thank her on behalf of the gay community, and tells them that she is "not a gay woman" and thus "not fully part of that community in a way that you can understand what you all go through".

Now does this mean she no longer identifies as bisexual? No. Here's why:The reason why her saying these things sounds strange is because we are so used to using "gay" as an umbrella term nowadays. However, that is not what she is doing in this instance. What they are talking about here is the gay community, as in gay men (and for women, lesbians), not the LGBTQ+ community. She rightfully says that she is not a gay woman or in other words, a lesbian (she's never claimed to be), and then goes on to acknowledge that for that reason she can not fully understand what these gay drag queens have been through. The struggles the bisexual community faces differ from the ones the gay community deals with, especially for bi women. Gaga has also only been in different-gender relationships in the public eye, so she hasn't had to deal with public backlash over her being with a woman. And though she of course fights for the entire LGBTQ+ community, she has often acknowledged the gay men in her life specifically and is doing it again here. She has stood up for them even though she is obviously not one of them.It is notable, however, that it is not uncommon for bisexuals to feel like they don't fully belong to the LGBTQ+ community the way gays and lesbians do. One of the reasons for that is the myth of "straight-passing privilege" that many (seemingly including Gaga) buy into.
No one can really fault her for that because it, the idea that bisexuals are not oppressed "enough" to be fully part of the community, is something not just gays and lesbians but also many bisexuals have internalized.
I encourage you to read more on the topic here.

It is also notable that this is not the first time Gaga has said those exact words. In an interview with Out magazine from 2009, she said the same thing while simultaneously acknowledging past relations with women. She also said she's gay in the same interview, again underlining the difference between being gay (attracted to the same gender) and identifying with "gay woman" as a label.

3. She referred to herself as an "ally"

In 2016, a day after the deadly mass shooting inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, Gaga held a tearful speech in solidarity with the victims and their families.
During the speech she pointed at the crowd and said "I hope you know that myself and so many are your allies."
This quote was taken out of the context of the full speech.

If you read or watched the full speech, you might notice that she also talked about "your and our community", clearly including herself in the community. But naturally the buzzword "ally" is the one that caught the attention. So what is the issue? There is an obvious distinction between a straight ally and actual members of the LGBTQ+ community. So most of the time when a person refers to themselves as an ally, they are assumed to not be a member of the community they ally themselves with and thus straight (and/or cisgender, which Gaga is anyway). However, people within the community can (and should) also be allies to other people within the community (e.g. cisgender gay men being allies to the transgender community). So there is a misunderstanding of who exactly Gaga is referring to that she allies herself with. As she already declared her belonging to the larger community and is pointing at the crowd, it becomes pretty clear that she uses the word "ally" in reference to the grieving families, the victims of the attack and to the LGBTQ+ community of Orlando that make up the crowd, voicing her support for them specifically. Thus, she does not call herself an ally to the entire LGBTQ+ community but to a smaller subgroup within it.With that in mind, there really is no need at all to always bring up the fact that she used this word once (because it really is the only time I have found her using it). And more often than not, this instance is only brought up in order to make her look unsure of her sexuality or to erase it completely. "Ally" is not an identity label that needs to be respected like LGBTQ+ identities do, and it should not be treated as one.Now to clarify that I am not just projecting onto her, let me provide you with an interview from 2013 with B96, in which she asserted that she is not a straight ally because, as she jokingly said, she is only "half-straight" (another thing that's okay for bisexuals to joke about but not for non-bisexuals to call them because it contributes to erasure).

Transcript of RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked

Valentina:
"Gaga, may I tell you something? I would like to thank you on behalf of the gay community for what you do for our community and how much you love us."
Gaga:
"I appreciate you saying that because, you know, I'm not a gay woman. And it's that, you know, touchy sort of subject where, can you stand up for people that you are not necessarily fully part of that community in a way that you can understand what you all go through, right? But I have always been surrounded by incredibly intelligent, powerful gay men who have lifted me up through lots of changes in my life. Becoming famous was very strange and it's the gay men in my life that have helped me to become a woman and I don't know that a lot of people would understand that but it's because of what you've been through, you have survived so much that you inspire me to continue surviving."

Transcript of Gaga's Orlando Speech

Gaga:
"I know that you all have been feeling a tremendous range of emotions since we've all heard about this horrible, hateful attack on Orlando and on your and our community. As we have now witnessed the largest mass shooting in American history, I can't help but feel that this level of hatred, like all prejudicial crimes, this is an attack on humanity itself. This is an attack on everyone. Tonight, I gather humbly with you as a human being in peace, in sincerity, in commitment, in solidarity, to take a real moment and mourn the tragic loss of these innocent, beautiful people. And let's all today pledge an allegiance of love to them and to their families, who are suffering so deeply. They are sons and daughters. They are fathers and mothers. They are all our brothers and our sisters. But tonight, I will not allow my anger and outrage over this attack to overshadow our need to honor those who are grieving truly for their lost ones, lost members of the LGBT community. I hope you know that myself and so many are your allies [points to crowd]. Not only me but everyone here. We represent the compassion and the loyalty of millions of people around the world that believe in you. You are not alone. You are not alone. Tomorrow I hope that we all raise thoughtfully and loudly towards solutions. But tonight and right now, Orlando, we are united with you."

June or August - NewNowNext Pop LabInterview

“My dream date… Bowie concert 1973. But he or she would have to have a time machine. I think you’re just born who you are. We’re born who we are. Everybody always wants to find the label or the stigma or the category for you. I just am who I am. I really don’t consider sexual orientation. I just am who I am. But I’ve kissed a girl and I liked it, to quote Ms. Perry.”

August 8 - HX MagazineInterview

Are you really as boy-crazy as your lyrics suggest?
“Yeah. Well, I’m girl-crazy too. I really depends on where I am. I love men, I love women and I love sex, but I’m actually pretty introverted right now because I’m so enveloped in my work, and it’s hard to let anybody near that. People fuck with your energy, and it’s very hard to find people that are supportive of your art and don’t want to take time away from it. A lot of times, boyfriends and girlfriends get jealous and want all your attention, and I really don’t have time for that.”
Do you consider yourself bisexual?
“Sure. I mean, I don’t really consider sexual orientation in general. It’s like, people are born the way they are.”

I’m gonna read a little quote, you can tell me if it’s true or not. “I love men. I love women. I love sex.”
[laughs] "That is a quote.”
And did you say it?
“Yes.”
No, I like it. Might as well be honest, right?
"Yeah, sure." [laughs nervously]

November 13 – The AdvocateInterview

You hop on a girl’s lap in the video for "Poker Face". Is sexuality-bending just part of your act?
"I would say yes. I mean, I think I'm a free-spirited woman, and I intend to continue to push sexual boundaries in my work visually and musically."
Let’s say you're only allowed one decadent lesbian fling in your life -- who’s it going to be with? And who dominates during the proceedings?
"I would say... Dita von Teese. I have a total girl-crush on her. And who’s dominating? I think it would have to be an equal love-sharing."

December – Fab MagazineInterview

Recently you dropped the news that you identify as bisexual, which is a really ballsy move for someone in the pop music industry. Why did you make the choice to come out about it?
“It’s actually something I don’t really like to talk about anymore. I’m kind of disappointed by it all. I don’t like to be seen as somebody who is using the gay community to look edgy. I’m a free sexual woman and I like what I like. I don’t want people to write that about me because I feel like it looks like I’m saying it because I’m trying to be edgy or underground.”
It’s weird that honesty sometimes backfires like that. I guess you’re trying to avoid the lesbian-chic transparency of someone like the hotly contested Ms. Katy Perry.
“I mean, look, I know Katy and she’s super nice and I don’t want to say anything bad about her music or her. I’ll just say not in terms of Katy but just in general, I’m very careful about the way I write about sexuality. I push boundaries in everything I do, I have a lot of girl on girl in my short films, there’s a lot of boy on boy onstage. I do all kinds of stuff like that I do not want to make anyone feel used. I’m not trying to use my gay fans to get a fan base, I really genuinely love them and that’s why I made the decision very early on to not play “Boys, Boys, Boys” in the clubs right away. I didn’t want it to be seen like I was trying to promote a song that was like a gay club anthem. Not because I don’t wanna have a gay club anthem, I want all my songs to be gay club anthems, I want the whole show to be one giant gay club anthem, but I just didn’t want to be seen as the girl who is just using her gay songs to get out there. Anybody that writes music that touches on sexuality or gay anything is setting themselves up to be a target for questioning and interrogation. But I appreciate when people ask me those kinds of questions so I can tell it how it is.”

January 27 – Poker Face single release (US)Lyrics

In January 2009, Poker Face was released to mainstream radio in the United States, while it had already been released in some forms in other countries starting September 26, 2008.In the chorus, the lyrics alternate between “He’s got me like nobody” and “She’s got me like nobody”, especially audible when she performs the song at the piano. As she later explains in interviews, the lines “He can’t read my Poker Face” and “I’m bluffin’ with my muffin” are to convey that, while she is sleeping with her boyfriend, he is unaware that she is actually fantasizing about women and that being the reason she is turned on.She also included the hidden lyric “Po-po-po-poker Face, Po-po-fuck her face”. Though it is not printed in the official lyrics (to avoid censorship), it can be heard in the studio version and sometimes she also sings it live, usually on the piano.Few radio stations have been aware of it and thus it seldom gets censored. She usually censors herself when performing it live but the times she doesn’t (as well as her explanation) will be listed further down.

January 27 – Mix 93.3's Dave OInterview

Tell us the story of Poker Face and where it came from."Well, Poker Face is about a lot of different things. I put a lot of double, triple, quadruple entendres in my music. [...] And if you listen to the background very carefully in the record, it's also kind of about, you know struggling if you like guys or girls. That says 'Can't read my Poker Face, she's got me like nobody. Can't read my Poker Face, he's got me like nobody.' So it's also a little bit about maybe not telling somebody that you're confused about whether you like boys or girls."

“Bluffin’ with your muffin, it’s you know, the song Poker Face, it’s about 'poker-facing' with your sexuality. When I was making love to my old boyfriend, I used to think about women sometimes.”Oh good lord. I’m sure he was delighted when you told him because...
“I actually never told him but I’m sure he’s watching now. Well, that’s what the song is about. You asked me. Do you want me to lie?”

The article says
"I like boys that look like girls," she told Tarts in a recent interview. "All my boyfriends look like Nikki Sixx, amazing."
Now to confuse us even more, the mysterious pop princess said that her hit song "Poker Face" was written in honor of her many boyfriends … and girlfriends too?"I’ve dated a lot of guys that are really into sex and booze and gambling so I wanted to write a record that my boyfriends would like," Gaga added. "But something I don’t really talk about is if you listen to the chorus I say ‘he’s got me like nobody’ then ‘she’s got me like nobody.’ It’s got an undertone of confusion about love and sex …"But when asked if she was bisexual, the flamboyant pop princess played mum on the "very personal" issue.

June 11 – Rolling StoneInterview

The article says
Gaga considers herself bisexual, but her attraction to women is purely physical – she’s never been in love with a woman. And she’s been highly disappointed by her boyfriends’ reaction to this aspect of her sexuality. “The fact that I’m into women, they’re all intimidated by it,” she says. “It makes them uncomfortable. “You know what? I think that everyone needs to just make music. Or make a dress or build a show. And, you know, I was always honest about my sexual freedoms. I did say in the beginning that I didn’t like answering the question on bisexuality, only because I didn’t want my gay fans to feel like I was using the gay community for “edginess”. “Oh she’s edgy ‘cause she likes girls.””Right.
“And then, so I didn’t say- I would just say “yeah.” You know? “Yeah. Am I bisexual? Whatever you wanna call it, you can call it.” [...] But I just- I think that I really - as much as I might art-direct every moment of my life - I really do feel to an almost nauseating degree in the press, that I really focus on my art. And I say that a lot. My art, my work, the technology, the Haus, my creativity. September – Out magazineInterview

“I had a few gay piano teachers. I was in acting class and ballet from a very young age, and I remember being around a lot of gay boys in dance class. I feel intrinsically inclined toward a more gay lifestyle.” She did Ellen before Leno, performed in gay clubs before straight ones, and plugs the gays constantly in interviews, even those with straight publications. Despite a lesbian subtext to “Poker Face” -- the song is about, among other things, a woman lusting after a woman while dating a man -- Gaga says, “I myself am not a gay woman -- I am a free-spirited woman: I have had boyfriends, and I have hooked up with women, but it’s never been like ‘I discovered gayness when I was dot dot dot.’ ”Her devotion to gay culture is unparalleled by any other artist operating at her level of visibility or success. “When I started in the mainstream it was the gays that lifted me up,” she says. “I committed myself to them and they committed themselves to me, and because of the gay community I’m where I am today.” Earlier this year, in her acceptance speech for her MuchMusic award for best international video, Lady Gaga thanked “God and the gays.” Before agreeing to tour with Kanye West this fall, Gaga told the rapper, “I just want to be clear before we decide to do this together: I’m gay. My music is gay. My show is gay. And I love that it’s gay. And I love my gay fans and they’re all going to be coming to our show. And it’s going to remain gay.” That’s another clause in the Gagaland constitution: Gay culture shall gush undiluted into the rapids of society. It shall not be co-opted, fancified, dolled up, or Uncle Tommed. “I very much want to inject gay culture into the mainstream,” she says, “It’s not an underground tool for me. It’s my whole life. So I always sort of joke the real motivation is to just turn the world gay.”

October 30 – Barbara WaltersInterview

The interview that is often seen as the “coming out” interview. You had a big success with Poker Face. Now there is a line that everybody found had to do with your sexuality, you know what I’m talking about.
“Oh bluffin’ with my muffin.”
Yeah. Bluffin with my muffin, I hope I’m allowed to say it. So people thought you were saying you’re bisexual. Are you bisexual?
“Well, I do like women.”
Do you like men, too, or just women?
“Oh yeah. Well, I’ve only been in love with men, I’ve never been in love with a woman. But that’s really what the song is about. Why, when I was with my boyfriend, was I fantasizing about women?”
Have you had sex with women?
“Well, I… my goodness.”
You don’t have to answer me that second. We can leave it as a big unknown, if you want.
“I’ve certainly had sexual relationships with women, yes.”

November 3 – On the Record FuseInterview

I love Poker Face. Can’t quite figure out, what are you saying, when you say “he can’t read my poker face”?
“Well, the song was about fantasizing about women, when I was in bed with my ex-boyfriend. So I didn’t really want him to know because it bothered him and that was the inspiration behind the song.”
You talk about that you’re gonna have sex with women but you won’t love women.
“No, no, no, no. That’s twisting my words.”
Okay, tell me. Tell me.
“I have loved all women. I love so many women in my life.”
You were physical, only physical with women.
“I’ve never been in love with a woman in a romantic way."
Okay, I mean that’s what I meant. But I just wonder why you haven’t been in love with a female heart in that romantic way.
“I don’t know. But I certainly had beautiful relationships with women that I’ve been very close with. I don’t know if even I can say I’ve ever been in love with a man.”
But you consider yourself bi, right?
“Yeah, I do.”
And you said that letting that be known you regret because you said you’re- it seems to some that you’re using the gay community to seem edgy?
“Oh no. That’s not true. I don’t think that’s true. I think the gay community knows where I stand.”
I mean it does make you seem edgy but it’s not a thing that you’re using, it’s who you are.
“That’s why I don’t really talk about it very much. ‘Cause then it becomes a thing. That’s why I say, let’s talk about the music but I am honest about it so that I’m clear.”

November 20 – Steffen RüthInterview

Your biggest hit 'Poker Face' is about homosexual fantasies, amongst other things. Could you fall in love with a woman?
"Of course. There are no rules or limits when it comes to love."

Note: The earliest publication of this quote was in Steffen Rüth's interview in German outlets. The English original quotes seem to have been published in Now Magazine five months later, as the linked source claims.

December - Outlooks MagazineInterview

The music on The Fame Monster is very sexual and aggressive, are you the same way in between the sheets? "If" you were a gay man, would you be a top or a bottom?
"I'm both… why limit yourself. Personally I think being exclusively "anything" gets a bit boring when it comes to sex."
You explore your sexuality quite a bit, especially in the music video for LoveGame in the phone booth with a HOT female. What would you consider your sexuality to be?
"Muffin-sexual" [laughs]
Note: Gaga has explained in other interviews that muffin is a metaphor for vaginas.

January – Elle MagazineInterview

The article says
When I ask about her attraction to women and try to get her to tell me which female performers would be her dream conquests, she says, “That’s difficult for me to answer. It trivializes being bisexual.” She’ll only mention her current nonsexual idol, Yoko Ono, who thrilled Gaga by sending her an appreciative message after hearing her perform “Imagine” before the rally.

January 27/28 (shoot), March 11 (release) – Telephone videoMusic Video

The Telephone video features a scene in a women's prison in which Gaga makes out with a nonbinary inmate who plays the role of her “prison girlfriend” (though they have more conversations about gender during the shoot).

Heather Cassils, who plays the inmate, talked in interviews with Gawker and Out about how natural and good the kissing was and also said “While Gaga may not be a lesbian, Gaga is clearly not straight but certainly she is queer. I don’t see any problem with her reclaiming these images as well!”

Gaga's relationship with Beyoncé's character is also very queer-coded. She hints more at this in later interviews.

March 18 - Kyle and Jackie O ShowInterview

The original source was nowhere to be found so here is the quote
via autostraddle
Lady Gaga was interviewed on The Kyle and Jackie O Show in Australia in an interview they’re promoting as “Gaga’s gay revelation.” Apparently no one let them know that Gaga has been an out bisexual for some time now? Their fact-checkers must be worse than ours! (We don’t have any).
Gaga said Telephone was supposed to be a commentary on consumer culture and American culture and was an opportunity to use homosexual themes in a commercial environment. Also, the story of the Telephone video could’ve been told to “Happy Birthday.” Regarding the most controversial themes of the video, she brings up S&M and violence and says that’s not really what the fuss is about:“It is my personal belief that this video is not getting so much attention for those [violent] themes because I’ve used those themes in my videos before, haven’t I? It’s because it’s with Beyoncé and it’s because there are so many homosexual themes, and transgendered women in the video. Some people believe that being gay is a choice, and it’s not a choice. We are born this way. It has one foot in the art community and one foot in the commercial world.”

May 22 - The Times MagazineInterview

The article says
“Do you know what that girl at the bar said to me?” she says, sipping her Scotch, and taking a single drag off a fag before handing it back. “She said, ‘You’re a feminist. People think it means man-hating, but it doesn’t.’ Isn’t that funny?”
Earlier in the day, conversation had turned to whether Gaga would describe herself as feminist or not. As the very best conversations about feminism often will, it had segued from robust declarations of emancipation and sisterhood (“I am a feminist because I believe in women’s rights, and protecting who we are, down to the core”) to musing on who she fancied. (“In the video to Telephone, the girl I kiss, Heather, lives as a man. And as someone who does like women, something about a more masculine woman makes me feel more… feminine. When we kissed, I got that fuzzy butterfly feeling.”)We had concluded that it was odd most women “shy away” from declaring themselves feminists, because “it really doesn’t mean ‘man-hating’ ”.“And now she’s just said the same thing to me! AND she’s hot!” Gaga beams. She points to the girl – who looks like an androgynous, Cupid-mouthed, Jean Paul Gaultier cabin boy. “Gorgeous,” Gaga sighs.

June 1 - Larry King LiveInterview

You said that your song "Poker Face" from "The Fame" is about your own bisexuality. Do you -- how do you deal with that? Is that -- how do you deal with -- are you with men more or women more? Do you want to be married? What -- what do you think?
"I deal with it just fine. I'm -- I'm looking for love just like everyone else, Larry. But right now, love is in the form of my fans. Love comes in many different forms. Right now, I'm passionately only serving them."

September 20 - 'The Prime Rib of America' SpeechSpeech

In a speech calling for the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell she continuously refers to herself as gay."Equality is the prime rib of America, but because I'm gay, I don't get to enjoy the greatest cut of meat my country has to offer.""He gets the honor, but we gay soldiers, who harbor no hatred, no prejudice, no phobia, we're sent home?""This equality stuff, I thought equality meant everyone. But apparently, for certain value meals, for certain civil rights, I have to pay extra, because I'm gay. I'm allowed to stand in a line next to other men and women, I'm allowed to get shot at and shoot a gun to protect myself and my nation, but when it's time to order my meal, when it's time to benefit from the freedoms of the Constitution that I protect and fight for, I have to pay extra. I shouldn't have to pay extra. I should have the ability, the opportunity, the right to enjoy the same rights — the same piece of meat — that my fellow soldiers, fellow straight soldiers, already have included in their Meal of Rights.""My name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. I am an American citizen, to the senate, to Americans, to Senator Olympia Snowe, Senator Susan Collins — both from Maine — and Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts. Equality is the prime rib of America. Equality is the prime rib of what we stand for as a nation. And I don't get to enjoy the greatest cut of meat that my country has to offer."

"I suppose we can have a little bit of a conversation about my very, very naughty relationship with Beyoncé Knowles." (October 20, Herning)"I will keep you daily briefed about my very personal and slightly inappropriate relationship with Beyoncé Knowles." (October 26, Dublin)"But in the meantime, my darlings, I would like to speak with you specifically about my slightly inappropriate and very deeply devoted relationship with Beyoncé Knowles." (October 29, Dublin)"In my very inappropriate and slightly... sexual relationship with Beyoncé Knowles." May 10 – Gaga by GaultierInterview

Jean Paul Gaultier interviews her.You have a lot of friends that are gay?
"Always. My whole life. I never really knew why. We never talked about the fact that they were gay or not."
Are you lesbian? Are you bisexual? Or are you trisexual? It was Marlon Brando, which was saying that he was trisexual.
"Trisexual, fashion-sexual."
Voila, can be, yes. That’s good answer.
[laughs] "I guess, yes, I would call myself a bisexual. Even though I say I’m a bisexual, I almost feel like it’s not fair to say that because I’ve never really been in love with a woman before. I like women, sexually, but I’ve always gravitated towards gay men, my whole life. My whole life. I don’t know how I would have survived all this time without the love and support of my gay friends."

During her speech at Euro Pride she includes herself in the LGBTQ+ community and speaks from a "we" perspective when calling for their rights."Today, and every day, we fight for freedom. We fight for justice. We beckon for compassion, understanding, and above all, we want full equality, NOW!""We are here today because we are not less valuable. We are here to proclaim our strength, our steadfastness, and our intelligence. We will not be treated as anything less than human.""On the night of June 27, 1969, in the heart of my home, Manhattan's West Village, the gay rights movement was born. We stood together on that night the same as we are standing here today in solidarity for change. But today, we stand with peaceful flags, hope for togetherness.""We have come so far from the days of Stonewall, but despite the political advances made in terms of our rights and visibility as LGBT people, sadly the truth and the fact is that homophobia and anti gay violence and bullying are alive and real.""I'm often questioned: How gay are you Lady Gaga? [...] And on a gay scale of 1 to 10, I’m a Judy Garland fucking 42.""It is my profuse belief that our powerful stories will bridge the gap of human commonality. We’ve all got the same DNA, we were just Born This Way.""The precedent set by the government is so influential, and that is why we are here. Because it regards that some of us LGBTs may never had an equal seat at the table but we will."

August – The AdvocateInterview

The article says
“My love for my gay fans is just pure, authentic love for them as supporters of me from the beginning, and me feeling connected to their struggles as someone who is a part of their fight,” she says.
[...]Though she’s recently ended an on-off relationship with musician Lüc Carl, Gaga has discussed her attraction to other women in the past. As to whether she also considers herself an actual member of the LGBT community — “yes”, is her response after a brief pause. Gaga draws the word out, perhaps steeling herself for the follow-up question, wondering if she’ll be forced to address the rumor that she has a penis. “The b letter”, Gaga answers, and lets out a giggle. She really is in good spirits today.

October 2 – Huffington PostInterview

In your interview with Jean Paul Gaultier you said that while you identify as bisexual, you don’t think it’s entirely fair to say that since you’ve never been in love with a woman. If that’s the criteria we’re using, then I’d venture to say that a lot of my gay friends aren’t gay because they’ve never been in love at all.
"Love is an interesting thing. Perhaps I’ve never been in love before — I don’t really know? I think I have. I guess it’s subjective in that way. I just have so much respect for my friends who live bisexual lives and who live transgender lives and who every single day have to fight for their identity and have to deal with all the things that come along with sexual orientation. I like to be as open but as diplomatic as I can be in order not to sensationalize bisexuality in pop music. I have no interest in using my sexual orientation to sell records. I like to be as poignant as I can be about saying the kind of bisexual woman I am."

Gaga gave a speech about her relationship to the community. Below are only the excerpts of her speaking explicitly from the perspective of being a member of the community. However, it should be noted that her overall relationship with the community and how it has developed throughout her life are obviously also relevant to her experiences as a member of the community and shouldn't be disregarded. The full speech can be viewed here and the full transcript can be read [here]("I am so fortunate to have been welcomed by all of you into the LGBT community and to this family. And this family from the very young aged to the elders of this community, they share their stories with me daily. I listen to their stories and I understand more of the history and I marvel at how our civil rights movement is a continuum, it is ongoing, it is so brave. It was born, like you, to survive. Our evolution as LGBT citizens and allies continues to change and we see that the further we are able to reveal and share our lives, the further we move into the hearts and to the minds of other Americans.""A movement that was in a place of feeling lesser than to now a visible, powerful, organized, peaceful and loving community that demands FULL EQUALITY – full protections and safety and safety guaranteed to us under the law. We want nothing less than every other American.""I wanted to remind the world – the whole world of the cultural relevance and the importance of this community. We are not a niche; we are part a big giant part of humanity. It is time for us to be mainstream.""We are the CONTINUUM. We are ongoing. We continue the spirit of the first official gay rally in 1970 in New York one year after Stonewall. And although this weekend is a time for victory, I am a citizen of New York and I demand the rights to safe streets. The violence that has taken place towards LGBTs in the past months is unacceptable here and anywhere, enough is enough.

I mean, I said that- I know people think that I just say things to be shocking but I actually do like pussy. It just depends on whose pussy it is.”Then she talks more about what kind of women she likes, “The girls that I like… for me it’s actually similar to how I feel about guys. It’s just, it’s more of a energy thing. I used to all the time go to like lesbian clubs all the time. Yeah, and I loved them because I find that- I find lesbians to be way more daring than straight men when it comes to coming on to you. And I really liked that. October 17 - B96Interview

Thank you so much for being my straight ally.
"Oh, oh yeah! Of course! Well, I'm half-straight, just to clarify. I'm only half-straight. I know that everyone thinks that, like, when I said that I was bi like years ago, everyone was like 'Ah she's just saying it for attention' and then everybody was bi. But I actually am bi." [laughs]
Next time you're here you know, we'll...
"Oh yeah, we should go out. I said the only clubs I like are lesbian clubs, they're very fun."
Oh, you've gotta come to Berlin, though. Come on, come to Berlin with me.
"Okay, that sounds like a good time. Thank you for saying that. But, you know, what I wanna say is that I just made a decision when I made Born This Way, you know, I just was like, okay, I got everything I ever wanted. I had a hit song, I mean, I never in my life thought that Bad Romance would be the big hit that it was. It was like so crazy when that happened. And, you know, you just are grateful and then you say, okay what do I wanna do now? And I just, no matter what I tried to do or write or say, nothing about it felt genuine because I didn't care about being on top anymore. I cared about doing something that really meant something to my younger fans. And, you know, without you and everybody else in the LGBT community speaking out the way that they did over the past few years, we would be in a very different place now. And I just feel like I was one part of that puzzle."

And then it reverses for the second verse. So I’m talking to my boyfriend, who’s in bed with me, or my girlfriend, whatever. November 12 – The Howard Stern ShowInterview

While being interviewed she was asked about Poker Face again. So is this about bisexuality?
"Yes."
It is. And you say it’s about when you’re with a man but you’re really thinking about a woman.
"Yeah, well, I was just fantasizing about girls during sex, so…"
What does that say about the guys you were with?
"Oh, I don’t know. We shouldn’t maybe say that."
Well, yeah. But I mean a lot of guys you were with – imagine you’re thinking about being with a woman.
"Well, I was also – you have to understand – I was young and, mentioning the things that you brought up before, like the music industry stuff. I didn’t really like sex for a really long time."
Cause when a guy’s busy putting his hand on your leg and you’re just trying to get a job…
"Yeah, sex means something totally different."
Were you turned off to men at that point in your life?
"Yeah, I mean, I just had a hard time, you know with sex in general."
Right. Women or men because you were like “hey I just can’t trust anybody-“
"I just felt safer with girls. I felt safer."
In that same interview, she talked about her openness to having a threesome. You said you were attracted to this guy because he came on to you like a lesbian.
"He did."
What does that mean? A lesbian will come on to you in the sense that she’ll walk up and be bold and not afraid, there’s no pick-up lines?
"Bold, not afraid, no stupid pick-up line, there’s no nervousness, it’s just straight to the point and they always, you know, I always feel like the look in the eye, it’s very, you know, intimate and seductive."
That’s sexy to you?
"Yes."
So when a woman comes on to you, you will occasionally say yes, you’re okay with that.
"Well, not when I’m in a relationship but-"
You will not?
"No, I mean-"
You don’t do that even- it’s not okay for you to be with other women if you’re in a relationship.
"Well, you know, it depends on the guy. But, you know, guys that know me really well, know that that’s probably not a good idea."
When you’re in a serious relationship and a guy says to you “Lady Gaga, listen, I wanna bring another woman into the relationship.” That’s a deal-ender, isn’t it?
"No."
Yes.
"Into the relationship or into the bedroom?"
Into the bedroom.
"Okay, no. Into the bedroom is fine."
Is it? You’re up for that?
"I mean, I’m up for it."
If you’re in bed with this guy, assume you’re in love with him, and he says to you “you’re not enough for me.” That’s what he’s saying, isn’t it?
"No because that’s what women hear. But what I hear is that you wanna have sex with me and another woman and that sounds like fun."
You’re up for that?
"Yeah."
You sound like a party.
"Here’s the thing. I’m not the type of person that’s like, you know, having sex all the time with lots of random people. I don’t do that. I’m in a monogamous relationship, we’re having a good time, we’ve been together a while. If it were to come up, it comes up. It’s not- For me it’s like, the connection that I feel is so strong that it’s much stronger than physical. And you know, we’re very protective of our love as well and we treat each other with a lot of care and we’re very good to one another so, you know."

"I mean, I am bisexual, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I don’t need to – I’m sorry if this is a bit vulgar – but I don’t need to eat pussy in front of the whole world for people to take me seriously."That would be a good look…
"Right! You can believe it or not, it’s just here, I’m honest. I’m not saying it to be controversial; there you have it, here I am. I know I am not just a lesbian – I have a boyfriend – but all of my friends are in this community. That was the only community that ever, ever took me in. They made me feel strong; they made me feel powerful, they made me feel like I could be weird and be interesting and that was okay because they thought it was fierce. Without that I’d never be here and I will fight for my friends until I’m dead because it’s who I am and it’s what I believe in. And I couldn’t give a damn what any cynical person could say about it because love is love is love."

December - Tribu Move MagazineInterview

Translated from FrenchMany people accuse you of proselytizing gay and others that you are not sincere. So where is the truth?
"I do not understand that there can still be doubts. Since my beginnings, my studies in my art school, I have been surrounded only by gays and lesbians. All my best friends are gay, my professional entourage is gay, too ...I am bisexual myself! I always said it, I never hid it. What matters to me is to help young gays to live better with their homosexuality and to face this world and the surrounding homophobia. That they come out in peace, that their families do not reject them, but support them... I read their stories every day by receiving Facebook messages, emails, letters…"
So you owe everything to the gay community?
"But I am part of this community and it is the gays and lesbians who made me who I am today. I owe them everything! That's why I put so much effort into them: to give them back what they give me! I don't play a character, I would have been unmasked a long time ago. I'm just trying to be sincere and honest once again. When they adopted Lady Gaga as a member of their grand family, I promised to defend them at all costs and to the end because I represent them a little."

October 14 – artRAVE BirminghamLive Show

“You know some people are very cynical. I’ve been a gay activist for a long time now. And they’re always like ‘but Lady Gaga’s not gay. She doesn’t have a girlfriend.’ But I don’t need to prove to you how many women I’ve been with to be a gay activist and to fight for equality. Because ever since I was a little girl, all my friends- I didn’t have a lot of girl friends. I was the opposite of you. You had girl friends, I had a lot of boy friends. And I didn’t know why that they liked to watch Judy Garland movies with me. Or why they loved Liza Minelli so much. And I didn’t know why they liked to do my hair or helped me sing and get ready for my shows. But it was later in my life that I realized that all the men around me that didn’t want anything from me but my friendship and my talent. They were all gay. All of them. And when I started to play shows and I saw all these beautiful young gay fans in the audience, I thought to myself, I can’t take these kids’ money every night if we do not have equal rights, I can’t do it. So when you buy a ticket to see my show, you just know that I fight for you everyday. I believe in you.”

“First time I met her, she had a party for the cast and crew and that was a first meeting… she was in this beautiful gown that was sort of see-though and vintage and a diamond necklace… and I’m just trying to be cool. She said, ‘Are you nervous? I hear you are nervous.’ I said, ‘Yes.’ She said, ‘Don’t be nervous. I know about these things. I have been there.’ I was like, ‘Okay!'” Angela recalled.
At the party, which happened to fall on Angela’s birthday, Gaga gave the actress a sweet and sexy preview of what may come for their “AHS” characters.“Then she brought me out a birthday cake… and what she was doing to me on this cake… [it was] an X rated cake!” Angela said with a laugh, explaining that she then asked Gaga, “Would that be foreplay?”

"So we get to the set and by now, you know, you can't be tentative, you know. If you decided to, you said you're gonna do this, you gotta just dive right in, ya know, so to speak. So I was just kissing and kissing and we ki- and it was all day. I tell you it takes hours, a long time, you know."

October 1 - Daily InquirerInterview

Gaga spoke about how liberating it was to have parameters on set.“In another way, it’s like I am in charge all day. When I go home, I don’t want to be on top of a man or a woman. I like to be taken. So this is a nice change of sexual position. But sometimes, if you haven’t been on the bottom for a long time, that might make you weep. So it doesn’t mean to say that it is no big deal. It is a huge deal. It’s just that I have been on top. It feels good to have someone else driving my desire."

September 14 - Z100Interview

"Why when I go on the internet, why do I feel like I have to create something so perfect for people to see? And do I need to keep that up in public? And, you know, why am I chasing this guy or girl that I'm seeing on Instagram, trying to figure out where she is tonight? Because I've been spending time with friends and going out and living normal life and seeing how people date and I'm just like, this is exhausting. This is exhausting and you're sifting through a series of perfect illusions and then you date one and then you wake up and go 'Oh my god, that- I mistook that for love.'"

June 24 – Enigma at Apollo TheaterLive Show

“So it’s pride week. I wish it could exist 365 out of the year, but I’ll take a fucking global week. And wow on Friday, the 50th anniversary of stonewall. Yeah, that was when our community said enough is enough.
And all hail to so many including miss Marsha P. Johnson. What bravery, what courage. In the spirit of acceptance, the spirit of tolerance, the spirit of courage to be seen as you see yourself. I have learned so much over the years from all my fans. I feel so blessed, thank you for showing me and teaching me.
And I’ve learned something very important to ask people now, and I wish to share this with everyone who’s listening, not just in this theater, but around the world. Ask the question: ‘What is your pronoun?’Because for a lot of people, it’s really hard, and their pronoun's not respected or they’re not asked. And for me, I’ve grown and changed over the years in a lot of different ways, I’ve felt misunderstood in different ways. All our hardships are different; I don’t mean to compare; I just mean to say we’re in this together. And I’ve had a million reasons to want to give up but sometimes, if you’re lucky, you just need one good reason to stick around.”

“I may not to some people… some people, I may not even be considered a part of this community, even though I like girls sometimes. I would never degrade the fight you have all endured. The adversity that you have all been through to truly be seen, to be heard or the struggles that you’ve been through to love yourselves and to seek that love from other people. But honestly, I really, really love you.”"To the brave souls who came before us, Marsha P. Johnson – Sylvia Rivera, Harvey Milk – Audre Lorde – and igniting the fight for all of us."

July - Tribu Move MagazineInterview

Translated from FrenchIs the gay community your family of hearts?
"I grew up among them and around me most of my best friends are, same in the professional field. I have been seeing them since I was very young so for me, homosexuality is natural and I have a real love story with gays because I am a “pédé”! (Editor's note: "fag" in French). Seriously though, I am bisexual myself! I've always said it and never hid it, so I'm an integral part of this great community."

September 22 - Channel KindnessInterview

Gaga and Born This Way Foundation published a book with stories of kindness, bravery, and resilience from young people all over the world. Gaga commented on each of the stories. When commenting on a story (The Courage to Be Kind to Yourself) about a boy figuring out he was gay and coming out to his friend, Gaga said,
"He's so right and brave - who we truly are can never be wrong. The path to finding out who that is can be bumpy - it was for me - and a friend can be so helpful in navigating that journey. If you're struggling to come out or hoping to learn how to support someone who has come out, check out our friends at the It Gets Better Project or The Trevor Project."
Commenting on a story (Evidence-Based Kindness in Indiana) about a program focusing on mental health resources for LGBTQ+ youth, she said,
"Every LGBTQ+ person deserves to have the resources they need not only to survive, but to thrive, and I commend Taylor for highlighting one of the local resources that takes care of the mental and physical health of our young people."
Commenting on a story (Woodland's Historic Push) about a proclamation being passed making June the official LGBTQ+ Pride Month in the city of Woodland, California, Gaga said,
"Juan, what a beautiful story and an incredible gift you've given your community. Last year at WorldPride, I shared my own story about struggling to be accepted, not to compare but as a reminder that we need to love and be proud of who we are (and do the same for others). Everyone should be celebrated, the world needs more love and pride."

Bisexual+ Little Monsters

For Bi Visibility Day 2020, I started a small project on short notice, asking bisexual+ Twitter users who love Lady Gaga, what impact she has had on their lives and journeys.
Within two weeks I gathered over 100 responses and put them together in a little PDF.
You can view the PDF and read their stories here or by clicking on the image below.

Lady Gaga holding a pride flag up to her face and looking cute. Her face is surrounded by digital bi inspired stickers.

If you are a bisexual+ Little Monster and have not had the chance to participate but would like to, please send me a direct message on Twitter or Instagram.

Why I made this carrd

Hi, I'm Chrissi, my pronouns are she/her, I'm a little monster and I am bisexual. If you've come across this carrd, chances are you're a sapphic person who loves Gaga and enjoys gay content with her. But no matter who you are, you may also be wondering why someone would even bother to make such a big carrd about this topic.I originally made the Twitter thread that this carrd was inspired by because I grew tired of seeing Gaga's bisexuality be erased over and over again for ridiculous reasons.Instead of explaining them to uninformed people again and again, I made a thread that I could just link for people to read. I also added every occasion of Gaga acknowledging her bisexuality that I could find in the span of the two months I worked on the thread. One small Twitter thread doesn't solve the issue of bi erasure, though. It also can't really be edited when I find new stuff or learn more inclusive language to use. And it probably won't hold up as a credible resource if I want to challenge journalists on their bi erasure.I know this carrd can't solve that issue either but it is a bit more adaptable and able to hold more content and links. For me personally, I love resources. I love archives, I love timelines and I love when I can track quotes and stories back to their original source. I'm nerdy like that. When it comes to bi+ culture and history, a lot of it has been erased or is difficult to access. Lady Gaga is undeniably a part of bi+ culture (and has been inspired by parts of it as well). As a huge Lady Gaga fan and a queer woman myself, I do not want to see her queerness erased and forgotten in the times to come. They are an important part of her and her art and she is an important member of our community.I often find myself googling if certain artists are bisexual and if I'm lucky, I usually find one to two quotes but rarely more than that. Sometimes there are YouTube compilations to help me out (I made one of those for Gaga, too, recently). For people who are interested in Gaga's bisexuality and queerness, how she has navigated her life and career as a bisexual woman and how it has shaped her music and art, I want this carrd to be an informative resource to help them view her as who she is.I think a lot of meaning gets lost when she is only viewed as a straight woman, only through a heteronormative lens. It doesn't do her justice.Lastly and possibly most importantly, this carrd is for all her LGBTQ+ fans, but especially her bi+ fans who see themselves in her and live for her gayness. She is a beautiful, complex bisexual woman and we're allowed to relate to and feel represented by her.Love y'all and don't forget to call out bi erasure when you see it xo
